79% of Online Teenagers Use Generative AI Tools, Study Finds
You might be worried about what will happen with generative AI in the future, but teenagers are not. A recent study in the UK discovered that 79% of teenagers have used generative AI on the internet in some way.
Generative AI uses math rules and big data to make new things like writing, pictures, videos, computer programs, and music. These teens like to use ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALL-E, Snapchat My AI, and Bing chat.
Four out of five teenagers who use the internet, and are between 13 and 17 years old, said they use at least one generative AI tool or service. 40% of kids aged 7-12 also said they've used these tools. Simply put, only 31% of adult internet users above the age of 16 use generative AI. Out of the people who said they never used generative AI, 24% of them didn't know what it does or what it can make.
Snapchat My AI came out in April 2023 and is very popular among teenagers. About half of 7-17 year-olds have used it at least once. Young girls who are online use this generative AI the most, with 75% of them saying they use it.
Yih-Choung Teh, who works for Ofcom, says that young people are very good at learning new technology quickly, and that includes generative AI. "Kids and teenagers are using it first, but older people are also starting to use it for work and fun. "
"We know that some people are worried about what AI will bring in the future. " As the people who make sure the internet is safe, we are studying new technologies to make sure they are safe for everyone to use. We want new ideas to be successful, but we also want to make sure people are not in danger.
Many kids are growing up with AI as a tool for being creative, so the next ten years will be very interesting.
